Mostly 1-Southern California Owner
I've always been a huge fan of the 964s. It has nothing to do with the Singer cars or backdating trends. It has everything to do with how they look and drive. When I first saw the 964 at the LA Auto Show in late 1988 I was so excited. They retained the look of that classic 911 and fixed the one part I always hated - the impact bumpers. I had to wait another decade before I got my first shot behind the wheel of one. At that point, I was sold. The improvements in suspension as well as addition of ABS, AWD, power steering, and better A/C really made it a wonderful package. As we all know, during this time Porsche was in dire financial straits and literally on the brink of bankruptcy. There were many economic factors involved, but another part of the history is that these were the last of the truly hand built cars and they were just over engineered. At the end of production (1993/1994) the last few of these wonderful sports cars rolled off the assembly line. It would take another 2-decades before the world would realize that these were some of the best 911s ever built.
This 964 coupe was just 1 of 520 for North America for 1993. It was built in August of 1992 and sold new by Porsche of Newport Beach, California on October 25th, 1993. It was ordered with the following factory options:
17" Cup-Look aluminum wheels (7" and 8â€)
Automatic speed control
CD-radio Alpine Porsche CD-2
The wheels were chromed when new. The front right wheel had been replaced with a similar 993 wheel.
The original owner was a wealthy family that was bicoastal. They kept this 964 on the West Coast for when they were visiting. By the early 2000's, the primary owner fell ill and was driving it less and less. He eventually passed away 4 or 5-years ago and the family had the car go to a charity auction. The current owners purchased the car from the auction in 2014. They are local Southern California business owners and thought this would be a great weekend toy. Unfortunately, their daily lives have not allowed them to enjoy the car as much as they hoped and they have only put on about 1,000-miles on it since purchased. Shortly after purchasing, they had a local Porsche mechanic go through the car. They invested over $5,000 preparing the car for use on the following services:
New Michelin tires
60k-Mile major service:
Valve cover gaskets
Alternator and fan belts
Distributor drive belt and vent
Brake fluid flush
Replace power steering pump housing seals (and flush)
Repair A/C heater control unit
New rear spoiler air guide accordion grill
Hood and deck lid shocks
New luggage trim plastic piece
Furthermore, before delivering the car to us, they had it go to Callas Rennsport (one of SoCal's top Porsche specialists) for a once over inspection. Tony Callas found this 964 in very good condition with no major issues or signs of abuse. He performed another $2,500 of services as well, which includes:
Repair minor electrical items including replacing fuses/checking proper voltage
Install new idle control valve
Brake fluid and clutch flush/inspect system and test for leaks
Replace various bulbs
There were no signs of damage and the chassis was dry. The motor was strong and in proper running condition. He found the windshield washer pump was not working as well as some minor wiring issues at the license plate lights, which was keeping them from working properly. Finally, the engine was dry. There was slight weeping of trans fluid at the gearbox. That was it. For those who know, Callas Rennsport is one of the most detailed Porsche shops in the area and these results are quite remarkable for a 25-year old car.
This 964 is in very good condition and looks great. The exterior paint has just had a $1,000 polish/paint correction by Doctor Detail and really has a beautiful deep shine. Most of the paint is original with the exception of the hood and left rear fender. The hood has some light checking that was color sanded, but there are a few light blemishes (see pic). The car has been inspected and there are no signs of anything beyond superficial repairs. The rest of the paint appears to be original per the paint meter readings. The original Cup wheels were chromed at the dealer when new and showing some light pitting. They are wearing brand new Michelin tires. The brakes have nearly 75% life remaining. The glass appears to be all original including the windshield. There is a small chip in the windshield that has been professionally repaired.
The interior is in remarkable condition and looks barely used. It is all original and shows minimal signs of use. The leather seats look great with no tears or cracks. The headliner, door panels, and carpet all look fantastic with wear. The dash is free of cracks or warping. All the gauges operate properly including the clock. The A/C system blows ice cold. The original radio has been replaced with an older Sony deck and it does not power up. A K40 integrated radar detector system was installed many years ago and it does not power up either. All the windows and power sunroof operate properly as well as the cruise control.
This 964 drives fantastic. It feels incredibly tight and indicative of a Porsche that was well cared for and not abused. The car starts right up and holds an even idle (thanks to tuning/idle control valve from Callas). The power is strong with excellent throttle response. The shifter is incredibly smooth and precise with no slipping from the clutch. It crisply snaps between each gear with no grinding or other issues. It has a wonderful feel. The brakes have great initial bite with no fading or pulling. The car tracks straight down the road.
This 911 is truly one of those Porsche you can use all year round for any type of use. The all-wheel drive system is wonderful in inclement weather. And, as I've experienced, if well cared-for (like this car) is very robust and well-built. Furthermore, after spirited driving in both C2s and C4s, I've found the C4s more fun for normal spirited mix use. This example could easily be used from daily to weekend C&C events or even fun canyon carving.
This Porsche comes with the original maintenance book, space saver spare, and new Porsche car cover. Also, the original plastic under-panel for the engine is included, just not installed.
