1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible 2-Door description
“DIRECT DESCENDANTS OF PORSCHE’S RS/RSR WARRIORS, THESE WIDE-BODIED, NORMALLY ASPIRATED 911S ARE IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN”
– Paul A. Cadrobbi
Just imagine - there is less than 10 examples left in the world! The one we are happy to offer you is a 100% original vehicle, not modified in any way. It had only threeowners. Its got extremely low mileage, and being in pristine mechanical and cosmetic condition, isthe pinnacle of M491 bodied Porsches. You will not find a cleaner, all original, and bettermaintained example on the market.
The overall cosmetics are flawless. The exterior GuardsRed paint shimmers and looks fresh from the factory with no scratches, swirls, or blemishes. All the gaskets are just as they would have looked leaving the factory. No discoloration, burn marks, or wear shown on any of them. The rims are Porsche original and correct in vintage and style for this particular model. They were a Porsche factory option wheel at the time and are flawless as well. Always stored in a climate controlled garage and has hardly seen any rain, let alone any winter driving conditions. The interior is in the same immaculate condition. Minimal to no wear on any of the leather, steering wheel, or consoles. The upholstery is all in perfect condition and shown no signs of sun damage or discoloration. No cracks of typical aging on plastic parts. Just as flawless as the exterior.
Mechanically every service has been performed and all recommended maintenance has been completed. This includes filters and fluids. The brakes are in perfect condition and stop the Porsche with ease. The steering is tight and responsive, you can feel every inch of the road and the feel is very communicative. There is nothing like a vintage Porsche. Everything is solid, secure, and just as it would be coming fresh off the factory line. In addition to normal service, our service department also updated and retrofitted the A/C system to work with the newer R134 refrigerant. Now the A/C blows ice cold and is a great upgrade that will keep its new owner cool for years and years.
In 1980 due to US emission regulations the 930 was pulled from the North American market and it didn’t return until 1986. This left a huge hole for any driver in North America that wanted the aggressive looks and increased performance of the Turbo. The aftermarket tuners jumped on this and started turning the 3.2 Carreras into turbo-look cars. The quality of the body work ranged from frighteningly bad bondo jobs to conversions so good they were almost indistinguishable from factory produced 930s. But even with the good onesit was hard and very expensive to go deeper than wide fenders and spaced wheels and tires. The 930s had a very different suspension setup to take full advantage of the wide-body, bigger brakes, bigger wheels, etc. and to replicate this was a massive undertaking. But people did it to varying degrees of success.
Porsche woke up to the fact that they were losingmoney to the tuner market and in 1984 they began offering the M491 option on the 3.2 Carrera. It remained an option on the 3.2 from 84 to 89. The 87-89 models also have the G50 transmission just like the standard Carreras. Finally, direct from the Porsche factory, you could order your normally aspirated Carrera with just about everything the Turbohad, minus the actual turbo of course. This wasn’t just aCarrera with stretched fenders. It included:
The M491 option didn’t comecheap. This wasn’t like deciding whether or not to splurge on the electric seats or the sport steering wheel. Prices for the M491 option ranged from $10K to$15K extra depending on the year. The high cost kept orders and production numbers low, making these genuine M491 equipped models very special, very rare and increasingly a good investment.
In addition to providing clean CarFax that shows consistent mileage records, we at AlphaCars go a major step further. Using sophisticated Paint Meter tool (byElcometer) on all metal panels and comparing texture of the paint on the fiberglass and plastic panels to the factory paint finish, we test and certify that each body panel of this Porschehas original factory paint and has never been repainted for any reason. Except for the right front fender that has been professionally refinished due to a scratch from an object in the garage. The scratch was in the middle of the fender and blending for color match to the adjacent panels was not required. This paint work is undetectable unless you use a paint meter. The color match and paint texture are perfect, there are no over-spays or tape marks anywhere.
