1966 Porsche 912 description

1966 Porsche 912 Karmann Coupe. Matching numbers with 5-speed transmission. 93,650 miles, believed to be original. This car was built October 27, 1965 with features found only on the very early cars, non-adjustable front struts, 4-screw horn grilles, washer bag in right front fender, VIN plate between smugglers box and VIN stamp. Other notable differences were chrome bumper over-riders without rubber pads, black textured surface beneath bonnet, black behind horn grilles, satin black beneath engine grille. I purchased this car restored and have been correcting some of the details that were not correct during my ownership and now have the car where it should be. The glasurit silver metallic/96024 paint is the original color per COA and very rare for the 1966 cars, apparently only 3% were done in silver metallic. The previous owner found minor imperfections in the paint so he had the body stripped to bare metal, windows out and resprayed to a very high standard in April 2015. During my ownership I changed the incorrect Fuchs to correct date-stamped (08/65), 4 1/2 x 15 chrome wheels. The 4 mounted on the car are Lemmerz, the spare is a KPZ also dated 08/65. The wheels were refurbished by Bolton's, one of the best in the business. Tires are new Vredestein Sprint Classic 165 HR15 radials. I changed the later style rubber bumper over riders for the chrome units. The bonnet badge was changed to the correct orange bar unit, original, not a reproduction and has wonderful patina. I installed a new German square weave trunk carpet set from Autos International. I removed the incorrect H4 headlights and installed a perfectly restored set of correct headlights from John Audette, one of the best for lights and turn signals. When I received the car a little over a year ago, I took it immediately to one of our local Porsche shops and had it gone through, all fluids done, brakes bled, engine tuned. It did need the Solex carbs rebuilt, those were done by Eurometrics and had the wrong distributor, it now has the correct Bosch 022 unit. I replaced the rear shocks with new red Koni units and exhaust system was replaced with new Dansk original style system. I have many more photos and can take any others on request. When I bought the car, it had incorrect 1967 911S sport seats. I sold those and as part of the sale exchanged for a pair of correct seats with headrests. I had these completely disassembled and redone using a new kit from Autos International with houndstooth centers. The recliner hardware was completely disassembled and replated. The interior needs nothing unless a future owner wanted to replace the Repa shoulder, retractable belts with original lap only belts. I also have a very original 1979 Porsche 930 with 54k miles that I am selling. If the 930 sells first, I will keep the 912. I am happy to assist with local PPIs, there are several capable Porsche shops in the Sacramento area. Please note, I purchased this car restored and previous owner did not keep any previous records. The restoration was done to a very high standard, I can direct interested buyers to several local Porsche owners who have seen this car in person. The mechanical work I had performed was done by IPB Autosport. I am sure the owner of IPB, Ron Kain would be happy to discuss as well or do a PPI. Many more photos available on request. Just adding some new information, there seems to be a lot of confusion about 1965/66 912s so I will paste information here from the 912 Registry. This is a 1966 US model not a 1965 US model, do not confuse it with an early 1965 European model with a vin prefix of "3". I encourage interested buyers to spend some time on the 912 Registry site.
Note: Because the 1965 912 was officially only sold in Europe, virtually all examples feature engines with European format serial numbers and European style heater boxes, however the 912 Registry has verified at least eight 1965 model year 912s, that per their Porsche Certificates of Authenticity, came originally equipped with U.S. spec numbered engines. Other anomalies, such as 5 gauge dashboards, are also possible. Hence a 1965 model year 912 should not be dismissed outright over any one particular inconsistency. A 1965 model year 912 should have a VIN # that is lower than circa 350500 for Porsche-built cars, and lower than circa 451500 for Karmann-built cars. Be advised that these ranges are estimates, and that outer limits have not been definitively established. It is also possible that 912s were assembled out of sequence, thus some 1966 model year cars may have VINs land within the edges of these ranges. It is highly recommended that any prospective 1965 “painted dash” 912 purchase be examined for authenticity by a qualified Porsche marque expert.
