1969 Pontiac Firebird description
1969 Pontiac Firebird
For those that think that DeLorean was the best designer in Detroit in the 1960s, those same people would probably agree that his best design was the 1969 Pontiac Firebird. The Firebird was the answer to the Ford Mustang and even General Motors Chevrolet Camaro. Certainly, most would agree that even though the Camaro was a fabulous design, the Firebird was even a better version. DeLorean was a great believer in the designs that were coming out of Italy and gave his Firebird a bit of European flair. Interesting to note that the history books indicate that he had picked out the medium dark green (Verdoro Green?) color to be the featured color for the 1969 Firebird. Another interesting fact is that the 1969 Firebird was the first year for the 3-speed automatic transmission (instead of the two speed Power Glide), a great improvement in the acceleration off the line. Whether you are a great follower of DeLorean or not, the Firebird is certainly a great looking car especially in the Verdoro? Green Color, Rally Wheels, Bucket Seat, Center Console.
Yes, yes, yes, the car in this auction has all these important features in addition to power steering, power brakes, Michelin tires, 350 c.i. engine with 2 barrel carburetor, three speed automatic transmission and power top.
The current 83 year old owner has owned this car for over 30 years. He purchased the car from a woman who was the original owner. The current owner said he knew the original owner very well and therefore was very familiar with the car before he bought it. The owner tells us that it is a numbers matching car. He has upgraded the car with dual exhaust, cruise control, remote trunk release and upgraded radio. The car has four after market mud flaps. The car currently sports its original black vinyl top which is in need of replacement but still works. An original boot that is in really great condition. Due to the fact that the car has lived its entire life in a dry western state, the chrome is very nice and not pitted. Note the trim rings!
The car was repainted in original color. The seller does have the exact duplicate of the upholstery fabric. The driver's door armrest does have a crack.
The car had the engine lightly redone several years ago and in the owner's words, "is now as powerful as the day it was new". The owner tells us that in recent times he has taken 200-300 mile trips in one direction. The car ran fine and does not overheat, stops straight. The owner tells us that he has religiously maintained. Other than the clock not working everything seems to be in good working order.
The owner points out some flaws that the car has such as the driver's seat has some slight splitting. The clock does not work. While there is no body damage of any consequence it does have some chips and nicks as flaws in the paint. The owner tells us that this Firebird is a no rust car and has never been taken out in any type of snow or bad weather. The owner purchased the car from the original owner and has had the car since 1984.
You are NOT buying a car that is being "flipped" but a car that has always been enjoyed and well maintained. So if you already know what a Firebird is or are falling in love with a Firebird for the first time, this is a great opportunity to get a truly honest Firebird with a very reasonable reserve (Please don't ask).
