1972 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class description

5 DAY AUCTION!
Very nice solid straight early US spec car with euro 350SL manual transmission. Straight body with all original paint except for passenger rear quarter fender lip which had a parking lot scrape which was fixed by my body shop. The paint match is excellent. The car, being very original, has never been restored. As such, it shows heavy patina for it's age.
I rescued the car from the second owner who could not afford to fix it after the ECU failed. Fortunately, heonly owned the car for a short time. I bought the car and replaced the ECU and had my shop go through and check for any obvious issues. The car runs strong. I added an electronic ignition, new fuel pump and filter, fresh oil. The battery is strong. The original owner kept every service record to date and I have also done so. It has a very complete history of scheduled maintenance and repairs so the first owner seriously cared for this car as the paperwork can attest.
The body is very free of rust. There are no rust bubbles in any of the fenders or rockers. The underside is nearly as clean with a solid rust free structure. The only rust, and I looked very carefully before my purchase and had it put on a lift, is the right side trunk well (typical) in the form of an enlarged deteriorated drain hole along with one small quarter sized hole on the passenger side floor just under where a passengers right knee would be. Hard to photograph. Neither is nearly as bad as some of these cars can and usually do have (This is the 6th R107 I've had). The front bumper has a ding in the center. That is it for damage! The car has lived in Texas and New Mexico it's entire life. The original paint shines reasonably for being so old. The hard top is in good condition. The soft top's rear window is deteriotated. Included in the sale is a new brown soft top (was $375.00) which matches the existing soft tops color. I just have not had time to have it installed and now I am selling the car. I won't bother to pull the roof and photograph the soft top since I am including the new one. As with any old car there will be dry rubber seals, dry carpet insulation, brittle rubber and plastic. The plastic foot retainer cracked for the high beam. It needs to be glued back together or replaced and re-installed.
The car has good tires and stops great. The tachometer does not work. Original becker Europa II. Electric antenna missing.
Interesting and original two tone gold and brown paint scheme matches the original data plate and card. Original owners packet with owners manual, maintenance manual, parts manual etc... is included. A few pieces have some moisture stains and damage but the owners manual is perfect.
Now, about the four speed!I always wanted a four speed 350SL but they are rare and euro only. I finally found a 1972 euro SL with a standard transmission that was being parted out. I bought the entire manual assembly and had it put in this car. A fairly straight forward job requiring no modifications such that the car can be returned to an automatic if so desired. New clutch, new pressure plate and throw out bearing. Rebuilt hydraulics. The transmission was not rebuilt. It works well with the exception of occasional second gear synchro grind that comes to light during spirited speed shiting, otherwise, during normal acceleration and cruising it shifts fine. It may not be the synchro as these transmissions have several adjustments to the linkages along with bushings that could be the culprit as well. I have not tried alternative oils such as Redline which is known to help synchro issues. I have decided to stop investing in this car in favor of a car I just bought - a project 6.3 300SEL that will burst my wallet to restore.
The standard transmission transforms this car. It feels much more like a muscle car compared to the usual lazy "golf cart" acceleration of the standard transmission. The engine sounds great and pulls like a freight train. IT IS MUCH FASTER. I have the original transmission that is included in the sale. It worked just fine. I wanted to do this transformation to an early non-catalytic car with small bumpers and big displacement. I like the early mechanical fuel injection and the horsepower and torque these early engines have. The car does not smoke or burn any oil.
This can be an easy restoration or just enjoy the patina. The original leather seats are very nice and the dash is split in the middle in two spots. these are hairline, not canyon cracks. A protective dash cover is included. The map pockets are missing on the doors. I have the passenger door pocket but not the drivers side. Windows operate as they should. I have not tested the climate controls but asume the AC does not work requiring charging or? The fan works and is quiet. We live in a climate where we do not need much AC at 7000 feet in the mountains.
Dare I say you could drive this home? It is a 46 year old car, so join AAA before planning any long journeys. It should make the trip. However, It is sold as-is where is. I will work with your shipper and will hold the car for up to 3 weeks until shipping can be arranged. I suggest trying U-ship where companies can bid on your transport job.
Finally, There is no warranty and all sales final. Ask questions and do your research. Pictures can make things look better than in person, As such, bid accordingly. I am not responsible for folks that overpay for a car due to the "heat of bidding frenzy" that some can get wrapped up in.
