1953 Mercedes-Benz 170 DS description
Restored 1953 Mercedes-Benz 170DShas4 Cyl. Diesel Engineand 4-Speed Manual Transmission with Shift on the Column.
Thiswas the first Model produced by Mercedes following WWII and was based on Pre-Wardesigns and specifications. The onlymajor changes were the use of steel rather than wood for the flooring andrelocating the spare tire from exterior truck lid mounting to inside the trunk.
When purchased in '09 it had just undergone a complete 18 Month, Frame-On,$60,000 Professional Restoration to original Factory specifications. Prior to the extensive Restoration,it was in good conditionshowingno rust or body damage. Motor and Transmission were also in good working order.Ithad beenwell maintainedby its previous owner(s).
Workperformed included: Complete stripping of paint to bare metal and repainted inoriginal High-Gloss Mercedes Black. The upholstery was replaced including: front and rearseats, door panels, headliner and carpet. New windshield (due to scratches), re-chrome of bumpers, grill & trim.
Hydraulic Brakes: new hoses, brake shoes and wheel cylinders were also replaced at that time.
Engine wasinspected and showedvery little wear. These OM 636 Diesel engines have been known to exceed 1,000,000 Miles.
Engine compartment was cleaned and refurbished. In the years since I have owned this car it has not had any mechanical issues, break-downs or repairs. Even after sitting for many months at a time, it starts right up and drives well. Taken out of Winter storage on Sunday 4/24/16 and Test driven. Starts/Runs/Drives & Brakes well.
Since I have owned this Car it has been driven mostly at WWII Airshows and occasionally used in WWII related TV & Movie productions. Minor modifications were added to make it more Period Correct and to fit the Filming/Script or Event requirements. Changes include replacement of tires with off-road capable Knobby Firestone tires, Black-Out covers for Headlights, original NSKK Vehicle Badgeon radiator grill, addingleft and right MilitaryPennant Mountsto Fendersand Front & Rear German Military License Plates. All these items are easily removable to bring back to original 1953 Mercedes Specs.
The original take-off street tires and front Fog Lights are in storage andare included.
