What do you do when you’ve owned a 454SS truck for a few years, have an unlimited budget, and want to do some upgrades to it?
You go CRAZY, that’s what!
This 1990 Chevrolet 454SS is a clean title, clean CarFax, and clean AutoCheck vehicle that the previous owner had for a number of years. Instead of finding an older 50’s pickup to restore, he decided to go whole hog and do a complete, body-off-frame restoration and custom build on this truck, creating what may be one of the nicest examples of a 454SS available today!
The best encompassed the replacement of practically every single part on the truck with new components, and the file of accompanying receipts and documentation shows a little over $25,000 was spent on the build.
The entire truck was completely disassembled, and the frame was cleaned and blasted prior to being powder coated black and fit with all new suspension components from front to back and a Bell Tech 4/6 lowering kit with drop spindles, all new high-performance brake system and rotors, new lines, and a new GM steering rack.
The chassis then had a new 9.5 Eaton POSI rear end installed with 31 spline axles, Spicer U-joints, a Denny’s Driveshaft, 3.23 ring & pinion, new HD trans mount, and all new hardware.
The TH400 was sent to FTI Transmissions for a complete Stage II build, rated for up to 700hp including street/strip valve body, deep pan, high flow filter, performance clutches, and a rollerized output shaft with a 3,500rpm stall.
To make highway driving and fuel economy actually have a chance, a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit was installed with a floor switch and under dash lighted control pod. With it on, the truck actually becomes a fully capable highway cruiser, turning in 75mph cruising speeds at only 1,900rpm!
All of that stuff has to get fed the power from somewhere, and that’s where the master builders at Redline Automotive Competition Engines (R.A.C.E.) came in. Since 1987, Rich and his team have built some of the most amazing, race proven engines in the Country. They were tapped to do the block-out build on this machine, and the open checkbook left with them made sure that no corners were cut!
The original block was stripped bare, degreased, manga-fluxed, and race prepped for the festivities, and then stuff got real. The entire engine is a balanced and blueprinted build by them with every single component inside and outside being BRAND NEW.
The 454 is now a 498ci Stroked Big Block with 575rwhp that has the best-of-the-best in parts and components installed in it, including:

Every receipt, note, cam grind, valve spec, deck clearance spec…you name it, it is ALL DOCUMENTED, and it ALL comes with the truck!
End result is a dyno tuned REAR WHEEL HORSEPOWER of 575 and a max torque reading of 505 ft/lbs. Pretty wicked, huh? Oh yeah, the Dyno sheet comes with the truck too!
After it was built, it was fully dressed for shows with all the chrome, billet, and pretty stuff too, so you can win a race on Saturday and win a trophy on Sunday with it!
The entire air conditioning system was replaced with a brand new stock style unit that was made specifically for R134A, and was replaced from the condenser to the control panel right down to the lines and hardware to install it. It works PERFECTLY.
The grill was completely refurbished to like-new condition, and fit with specially ordered upgraded lights that look amazing, and really clear a path at night! New smoked tail light lenses were also ordered and installed, and look and function perfectly.
A NOS stock chin spoiler was ordered and installed, and looks fantastic, with fully functional new fog lamps too!
All of the glass was ordered new for the truck, including a solid 1-piece rear window which looks so much cleaner than the slider it came with.
While the glass was being installed, all new windows seals, scrapers, fuzzies, tracks, regulators, and power window motors were installed, to make sure everything was like new again.
The body was clean and straight to begin with, as the photo of the truck prior to restoration shows, but it was still dustless blasted down to bare metal before carefully being primed and blocked to better than factory condition prior to the multiple coats of hand-rubbed Onyx Black being sprayed on and buffed to a mirror-like (yep, just look at my ugly mug in the reflection in some of the photos below) finish.
The paint is stunning, and the truck has won two BEST PAINT prizes here locally at shows I have driven it to THAT I DIDN’T EVEN WANT TO ENTER!!!
It only has a few truly minor blemishes and miniscule marks from being driven about 2,500 miles since completion, but from every angle the truck is show-ready as you can see in the 100 photos below.
A NOS correct striping package was ordered and installed on the trucks new finish, and looks better than any of the factory installs I have seen over the years!
New factory style wheels in smoked chrome were ordered and fit with new BFGOODRICH rubber all the way around. It all looks, feels, and performs fault free!
Gaps, fit, and finish on the truck are better than factory in every regard, and the only thing on the truck that wasn’t finished in gloss paint was the inside of the bed, because it was used to haul car show chairs, coolers, and other goodies and the prior owners didn’t want to junk it up by adding a bedliner.
The aluminum framed tonneau cover is in exceptional condition, and looks fantastic on the truck while providing a nice weather seal to items in the bed.
Speaking of in the bed – The lucky new owner will find the factory original center console for the truck with working slider and lid inside a storage container in the bed. The prior owner didn’t put it back in because he liked have the open area to put a backpack and other goodies while keeping the passenger seat open for a co-pilot. Since the truck had all-new carpeting installed in it, he didn’t cut through to the mounting holes and neither did I. If you want it installed, I will gladly do it for free before the trucks leaves my shop, or you can just keep it set aside and drive it like it is. Your call.
From that topic, let’s go to the interior, where essentially everything that could be ordered new was.
Carpeting, stock seat covers, door panels, climate pod, ashtray, cup holder pull-out, steering wheel, trim pieces…if it could be purchased new, it was.
The interior really looks, and even smells, like a new truck. It has no smoke odor, no pet odor, and no other odor of any kind except some of that “new car” scent we all love.
EVERYTHING on the inside of the truck works like it should, without issue or exception.
Inside the glove box, you will find the original owner’s manual and warranty booklet.
Seat belts all function perfectly.
All of the lights on the dash work like they should, and there are no dummy or warning lights activated on the truck.
Headlights, tail lights, turn signals, flashers, wipers, and horn all perform perfectly without issue.
While the truck was stripped to the bone, an all-new NOS wiring harness and fuse block was installed, so it functions like new.
All new fender well liners were installed front and rear.
Like I said earlier, there are three complete folders with $25,000 in receipts for this build, and that doesn’t include the actual truck to start with!!!!
This beast is a proven and capable cruiser, and I have personally driven it from Ft Myers, FL to Miami, FL and back (about a 4.5 hour round trip in freeway and city traffic) without one single issue.
It chews up the freeway like a road grader, and thanks to the Gear Vendors Overdrive unit, does 75mph without killing the RPM’s!
In town, the massive race-ready cooling system keeps the truck running at stock temperature even when sitting in rush hour traffic for 20 minutes with the A/C on full blast! It DOES NOT RUN OR EVEN GET CLOSE TO BEING HOT!!!
Handling is spot on thanks to all-new suspension goodies throughout, and the truck feels like a new pickup regardless of if you are going 10mph or 90mph.
Braking is smooth, sure, and happens without any odd pulling, jerking, or modulation.
The ride is smooth and comfy thanks to the premium Bell-Tech lowering components used, and specific shocks selected for the modified suspension.
There are currently NO KNOWN ISSUES with the truck, and after putting a little over 800 miles on it myself, I am 100% comfortable in saying that you could fly in and drive this bad boy home anywhere you would want to!
The truck comes with a box full of extra parts and goodies, the aforementioned center console, and three gigantic folders containing more information, specs, receipts, manuals, diagrams, and other assorted stuff than you could ever ask for in a build!
It is a REAL 454SS, not a clone, and VIN and build codes prove that.
It has a clean and clear CARFAX and AUTOCHECK, with no accidents or issues, and was a perfectly nice running and driving machine before the prior owner got the sickness and had to go nuts chasing a dream!
